WWU Scholarship Portal FAQs

What is the WWU Scholarship Portal?

The WWU Scholarship Portal is a new system that streamlines the scholarship application process. Students complete one application, and the system matches them with all scholarships they are eligible for.

Who can use the WWU Scholarship Portal?

All current students—undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education students—can apply for scholarships through the portal.

When does the portal open for the 2025-2026 academic year?

The portal will be open from April 9 through 11:59 p.m. (PDT) May 4. Be sure to complete and submit your application before the May 4 deadline.

Why is WWU centralizing the scholarship awarding process through this portal?

Universities across the country have been centralizing their scholarship awarding processes for over a decade, as it is considered a best practice. By using a centralized system, WWU can review all sources of student aid, reduce the chances of scholarships going unawarded, and promote equity and efficiency in the selection process.

The portal makes awarding scholarships more efficient, ensures fairness, and helps students find and access financial aid more easily. The goal is to provide more students with the support they need to succeed at WWU.

For Students

My major/minor is incorrect in the general application. How do I update this?

Majors and minors must be officially declared to populate on a student’s general application. For information about updating majors or minors, please visit the Registrar’s Office FAQ page. This information can be found under the General FAQ tab. For additional questions regarding declaring a major or minor, please contact the Registrar’s Office (Registrar.Office@wwu.edu). Once updated, this will populate in the general application after a couple of days.

My academic interest is incorrect in the general application. How do I update this?

Academic Interests are initially populated from a student’s college application, we understand initial interest may no longer be correct. For information about how to update your Academic Interest in Web4U, please visit the Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center’s page: Academic Interest at Western. Once updated, this will populate in the general application after a couple of days.

I updated my major/minor/academic interest, when will it correct in the general application?

When a student has officially updated their major, minor, or academic interest, it can take about 2 business days to populate in their general application.

How will this change affect students applying for scholarships?

The new portal makes it easier for students to apply for all available scholarships with a single application while ensuring funds are awarded efficiently. This change makes scholarship awards more consistent, fair, and timely.

Do I need to submit multiple applications for different scholarships?

No! The system automatically matches you with multiple scholarships using a single application. Some scholarships may require additional information, which you can complete within the portal.

How does the scholarship matching process work?

  1. Log in to the WWU Scholarship Portal (single sign-on for WWU IDs).
  2. Complete questions and essays. The more you answer, the more opportunities you will be considered for.
  3. The system matches you with scholarships based on your qualifications and your answers to essay questions.
  4. Some scholarships may require additional information—be sure to check your application dashboard.
  5. Submit your application before the deadline.

Where can I get help using the portal?

What types of scholarships are available?

Scholarships are available for academic achievement, financial need, leadership, specific fields of study, and more. The portal will match you to those you qualify for.

I’m a new undergraduate student for fall quarter. Can I apply for scholarships in the Portal?

When you applied to Western, your application for admission also served as an application for admissions scholarships. For this reason, you do not need to submit additional materials through the new Scholarship Portal at this time.

Once you’ve confirmed your enrollment, the general scholarship application will become available and match you with any additional scholarships that you may be eligible for. Please note that the majority of scholarships are intended for current students, and opportunities for incoming Fall 2025 students are very limited beyond the admissions scholarships that you were reviewed for.

As you continue at Western, you will become eligible for more scholarship opportunities. Be sure to revisit the portal to apply for new scholarship opportunities each year!

Please note the WWU Scholarship Portal will close on May 4, 2025.

How do I apply for scholarships at Western?

Western Washington University is moving to a more centralized system. The WWU Scholarship Portal offers hundreds of scholarships accessible from one general application. This application will be available from April 7 to 11:59 p.m. (PDT) - May 4, 2025.

Who can complete the WWU Scholarship Application?

Any current student can submit the general application. Please note that the longer students are at Western, they will become more eligible for scholarship opportunities. Scholarships can have requirements such as confirmed major/minor, minimum number of credits, and relative experience gained through time at WWU.

What is the WWU Scholarship Application like?

The general scholarship application is tailored to each student. Based on WWU student data as well as the information provided while the application is being completed, the general application may vary in length. Students can complete as much or a little of the general application as they wish. A completed general application will give students the highest opportunity to receive scholarships.

The WWU Scholarship application will ask for: essays, resume, letters of recommendation. You may also be asked for examples of coursework, additional short essays, work experience, and more.

How do I request letters of recommendation through the general application?

Once students get to the letter of recommendation page in the application, they can simply add the contact information (name and email address) of their recommender. The recommender will receive an email invitation with instructions on how to submit a letter on the student’s behalf. Once completed, the student will receive notification that the recommendation has been submitted. Students may also submit a copy of a letter of recommendation as an attachment.

Can I read the letters of recommendation that were submitted on my behalf?

No, students will not be able to view the letters that were submitted on their behalf through the Portal. They will be able to confirm that a letter of recommendation has been submitted.

When will I know if I have been awarded a scholarship?

Typically, scholarship awarding will be completed in late spring/early summer for the upcoming academic year. Students awarded scholarships will receive notification via their WWU email address. They may also login to the Portal and review their dashboard to view any awarded scholarships. The dashboard also lists required tasks such as acceptance and donor thank you letter.

For Faculty & Staff

Will faculty and departments still have a role in scholarships?

Yes. While the awarding process will be managed centrally, departments and colleges are encouraged to continue cultivating and stewarding donor relationships, as well as supporting students in applying for scholarships that align with their academic and professional goals.

How does the centralized scholarship model ensure that donor intent is honored?

All endowment and gift agreements have been reviewed by scholarship administrators and the Assistant Attorney General’s office to ensure donor intent is honored. In many cases, these agreements already allow for flexibility in the selection process while maintaining the original purpose of the scholarship.

What happens to scholarships that were previously awarded by specific departments?

Scholarships will still be awarded to students in the designated fields of study as outlined in donor agreements. The key change is that the Financial Aid office will oversee the selection process, ensuring consistency and adherence to best practices.

Will this impact existing departmental programs or partnerships which are connected to scholarships?

No. Departments are encouraged to continue fostering relationships with donors and external partners, such as internship providers. The change only affects the selection process for scholarship recipients.

How can faculty and staff support students in applying for scholarships?

Encourage students to complete their profile in the WWU Scholarship Portal early. You can also direct them to support resources like tutorials and drop-in help sessions.

What changes do departments need to make?

Departments should update any scholarship-related content on their websites, emails, and advising materials to reflect the new WWU Scholarship Portal as the primary application system.

Does this new Scholarship Portal help with recruitment? If so, why are scholarships intended for upper classes also being awarded in this process?

This change is being made for a number of reasons, including recruitment and retention and making the awards process more transparent and equitable for all students. With this new software, all students can more easily be considered for all awards for which they may be eligible.

Will this change the way that donors are told who their scholarship recipients are?

No. Donors receive annual thank you letters from students, and they are also invited to Celebration of Scholarships events where they have an opportunity to meet their scholarship recipients. These stewardship activities will continue.
