Dr. Vernon Damani Johnson (Dr. J.) is a beloved teacher, mentor, scholar, advocate and friend to countless alumni,
colleagues, and community members. This $1,000 scholarship was established in 2021 in anticipation of Dr.
Johnson’s retirement to honor the important way that he has shaped so many lives through his dedication to teaching, social justice and racial equity.
Scholarship Qualifications
- Full-time undergraduate Western Washington University students.
- Preference made to applicants who demonstrate, in descending order of priority:
- A commitment for social justice activism demonstrated, for example, through volunteerism, work, or internships with governmental or non-profit agencies.
- Financial need, as determined by information submitted on the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA).
- Outstanding academic merit as determined on a year-to-year basis.
